About SŌ

Born in Brussels in 1988, SŌ le Grelle is a Belgian artist entirely dedicated to abstract painting. Her work stems from an intimate relationship with gesture and material, in a practice where painting becomes a language in its own right.

Her practice is rooted in an ongoing exploration of gesture, material and colour.

Creative from an early age, she gradually transformed a physical reality—essential tremor—into the starting point of her artistic process. Rather than working around it, she embraces it as a force that reshapes the gesture itself.

This has led to a distinctive approach to painting, where control and unpredictability coexist in constant dialogue.

She has developed alternative methods, exploring the depositing, removing, stretching and flowing of paint.

The surface becomes a space for experimentation. The hand adapts, searches for new possibilities and composes through the instability of the gesture.

Within her abstract universe, colour plays a central role. Her paintings oscillate between intensity and restraint. Vibrant chromatic passages meet quieter areas, where warm white structures and opens the pictorial space.

Her work unfolds at the intersection of instinctive gesture and deliberate composition, in a continuous dialogue between control and surrender. From this delicate balance emerges a pictorial language in constant movement.

La pratique de SŌ se déploie aujourd’hui en séries. Chacune explore différentes tensions entre matière, couleur et espace. 

Elle conçoit la peinture comme un processus vivant. Un espace où l’imaginaire du spectateur prolonge naturellement l’œuvre.

(SŌ le Grelle is the artistic name of Sophie le Grelle-Goethals, a Belgian abstract painter. She should not be confused with the illustrator Sophie Le Grelle, who is a different person.)
